It must be very rare. I found a doc about a guy who got NI twice in a row and his manager worked with him on improving his performance. At other companies you wouldn’t be allowed to underperform for an entire year.
I've heard that a large portion of the bonus is monthly and performance tied, so they lower this significantly if your performance goes down. Hearsay, so I'm not sure.
Yeah so much of Google comp is the bonus and RSUs refreshers. If you're doing bad it would be easy to manage out just by lowering these. And if you were good enough to get into Google, you probably can get another offer that pays way more than Google with crap refreshers and bonus. So I kind of doubt people would stick around
