Personally... I would expect a big layoff in Airbnb once after it IPO. The business model is not profitable and the user activeness is not good now.

Idk what Google is talking about with regards to ads, but as far as profitability, he/she is not wrong. Airbnb has had a “reputation” for being profitable and thus having a good long-term future, especially in comparison to Uber, but it doesn’t appear to have a sustainable model with respect to maintaining that level of profitability.

There are growing whispers and talks about this in the valley, and new startups like Sonder that have a similar business model but with a greater focus on making larger margins and cutting more costs.

One obvious advantage that Airbnb does have however is its current user base. It also has acquired several companies as it tries to become a complete, end to end travel platform.

All this to say that they seem to be doing things to continue to grow, but you should research more and talk to folks within the company before making any bullish claims

What I read from the report is that Airbnb is spending more in marketing. To put that in engineer speak if Airbnb was the only game on town you don't need to run Google ads. Everyone just goes to Airbnb. Now that you have booking and Expedia and Priceline all doing this, they just have to spend a significant fraction of their cut on Google. This raises very important sustainability of their business questions and their longer term margin questions

No one knows but so far financials are strong and we are profitable from last 2 years. Still have stable yoy growth more than 30%.
This year we may not be profitable since we increased our marketing spend this year, which could be because of whatever strategy executives has. No idea on it.

If we want we can cut marketing
Spend anytime and remain profitable but again I don’t know about growth strategy or anyone on blind. Unlike uber, lyft, we work ; Airbnb business model is profitable so no need to do layoffs. On contrary, we slowed our hiring so that we never have to do layoffs.

This is not true. I know a TON of people that were top performers that were laid off at Uber.
