How fast does Google promote vs facebook?

Sep 18, 2018 6 Comments

I interned at Facebook and learned that because of their up or out policy you're expected go from E3 to E5 in less than 5 years. I've also seen several new grads do it in 3 years. I'm wondering if Google also has promotions this quick. 3 years seems fast to get to senior engineer, so I'm curious if I'll be able to advance through my career as quickly at Google.

Lol no Google is much slower. Also, for what it's worth, everyone is expected to reach L4 (as the terminal level) at Google and not L5 (as per a revision of the older policy).

For growth at the cost of some wlb your best bet is Facebook.

'Terminal L4' is a nice way of saying that some orgs within Google don't have room for L5s at all.

You could be stuck at 4 indefinitely.

They can never make my mind stuck to L4. It is free to reach Jeff Dean level!

Google doesn’t really enforce up or out for their L3s either. I know L3s who have been there for more than 5 years.

Hitting L5 from a BS new grad in 4 years is considered to be quick. Doing it in 3 is exceptional.
