best wlb company?

Oct 14, 2019 53 Comments

been here for more than 5 years as SWE and feeling totally burned out.
So want to find next path having best wlb.
TC is around 400k but I’m totally fine with cut of my TC as long as wlb is good enough.

Any recommendation?

Can't you hire a maid for evening help? Like 2h every other day. You have a great TC that shouldn't be a problem.

Lean fire, or at least quit to a remote work/freelance/consultant job where you can sit in Indiana or Colorado or someplace with low CoL and coast along. I mean as an engineer people must understand trade offs

A million isn’t enough for retiring with a wife and kids, even in Indiana.

for WLB, you wont do better than old school manufacturing... lockheed, boeing, northrop, GM, Ford. literally everyone is respected for a 40hr work week. 6-2:30 or 8-4:30 is the norm. when youre done, youre done. people just fuckin LEAVE and DO NOT check their phones. it's crazy, but it's the culture. the downside is if you are super bright, super efficient, super ambitious, it generally doesnt get you anywhere. you are paid for 40hrs/wk. if you accomplish more in that timeframe than most, gets you nothing. if you work unpaid OT to get stuff done, gets you nothing. company just says thanks, then promotes a politician with an online MBA. you have to be very very clear on your personality and career interests vs WLB. it's a blessing and a curse.

He specifically said he's totally burned out. Even with a great TC, more money doesn't buy him mental energy and the variety his mind needs after 5 years at the same company

This. Twitter has focused on providing a good WLB for a few years now. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet.
