Dilemma-Continue contracting as QA or look for full time APM/PM job?

Mar 11 4 Comments

I have 9+ years of experience in QA. I’m making about 11k CAD month as a QA consultant (independent contractor) in Toronto. This is the highest I’ve ever been paid in my career. Although I’m CS engineer, I’m not technically strong/coder because I pursued Manual QA since the beginning of my career. I don’t think I can earn any higher with my skills. My goal is to move to Product Management. I did a PM course at General Assembly for the same. I’m unable to get any interview calls for PM (not even APM). I started applying to US & remote PM jobs as well. All my job applications get rejected with standard response.

I don’t even think I’ll get paid well if I get a full time PM job. Take home salary as a FTE in Canada would be almost half my current earnings. But I’m not happy doing QA job anymore. Is it worth risking well-paying QA job to pursue PM role for lower $?

PM always pays better than QA at the same levels by a mile and a much better role - in terms of influence and visibility. You’d be wise to move to PM

I'd say PM is better at the same level, just like dev pays more than qa.

An unrelated question, are you still doing manual or automation qa now? 11k seems really nice. I'm doing manual myself as a contractor in toronto and it's only 35/hr.
