Msft to amazon worth it?

Dec 18, 2017 80 Comments

Hi I am L62 at msft with 4.5 years looking to move to potentially amazon. The problem is I have high comp at msft for my lvl so I’m not sure if I can get a decent bump if I move (assume I will Be L5)

My comp is 150k base then stocks; bonus, 401k, espp, stay fit benefit pushes me up around 200k

Also kinda close to L63 as I was promoted to L62 12 months ago which will give me even more comp increase

Can amazon offer comp increase or not possible? I’m interested in moving but not sure if it is worth it if I get same comp

Even if you get more (and u will) split the money over estimated time spent at the office and reevaluate. White collar are tricked into working more for a flat yearly income. The comp vs life ratio will most likely be shittier at Amazon. If that's not important to you, go ahead. Amazon will definitely pay you more. But they will most likely work you into the ground.

    • Lol. No one works 12-15 hours a day. You just don’t have a life.

I think it depends on the team. As suggested, do your homework. On the right team, Amazon is incredible. On the wrong team, it is hell. This is very much like MS and any other large organization.

  • Go to Facebook or google instead, if you are looking for a public company. Else, try your hand at one of the startups before you grow too old. Amazon doesn’t seem like a good choice.

Amazon can easily beat your compensation. But remember that Amazon will pay you the least you would accept. Make sure you have competing offers.

This, even L5 SDE will beat your comp by a significant margin. Lol at bullshit like stayfit. You’re underpaid now.

    • Stay fit is $800 a year. Not huge but Microsoft has a lot of these smallish perks that translate to real money. They add up to Enough you can’t just ignore them

      ESPP: $2250
      Stay fit: $800
      401k Match: 9k
      Free soda / personal office

All amazon has is a shitty 401k plan

What is your expected bump if you are offered amzn sde 2? 20k-40k is possible, higher than is probably not.

    • I think companies give you a verbal offer and then a follow up email to summarize what was discussed. Eventually when you accept the offer, they would send you a detailed offer letter.

    • I always just ask them to send their best offer. Generally, there is 10-15% wiggle room. That is the norm. So, expect to get an offer lower than this just so they can flex up if needed.

Amazon is a great place and the NYT article is vastly exaggerated. I am an SDE2 with 4 years experience and 225K TC. With stock growth, I am right now at 260K. I work from 9-5pm strictly and work is easy going and enjoyable ...
