It can’t just be me who has noticed this. Especially non-eng types like PMs and upper management. There’s this level of sanctimony and holier than thou attitudes that is hard to take. Especially if they are politically liberal. Parag is a good example. I think I’m more ok with TC flexing and materialism than I am the casual smugness many in tech show. What do you guys think

The word you’re looking for is elitism. It’s rampant across the tech industry. It’s mostly an environmental thing where we were taught at a young age that we weren’t good enough. It’s a cultural thing most Indians/Eastern European people go through.

It takes serious effort to rewire your brain and not sound condescending towards significant others or friends who aren’t in tech.

    • For most people, a role in big tech is a big achievement. Like getting a PhD or writing and publishing a book with a major publisher. More importantly most people on Blind will know, big tech pays much more than what professions pay, short of business owners or doctors, lawyers. It's a weird feeling to say, oh I can just buy a house, when most of Reddit is screaming of not being able too.

Being in big tech is very elitist, not only does it promote your ability beyond what it might be in social circles and professionally, the work is also elitist, a Google a Microsoft, can reject a client of being "unworthy" of our time. A luxury not all software developers, PMs, etc. enjoy trying to put food on the table.

I can't help but feel I get this vibe alot from Indians, specifically outside of work. There is a sense snobbery in public encounters, usually from the female. Maybe I've just had bad luck.

I'm envious of the people refuting this. You must have either found great people or been lucky. I've bounced around a little and I've noticed this ALL OVER, including eng ICs. Its just honestly more comical coming from the self righteous folks in management.
