bootcamps

saw the post on linkedin from netflix. Wendy did 4 months bootcamp, then worked at lending club for 1 yr 8 months in Software before joining netflix. she must be doing very well for the company to post this, kudos to her: however, this raises the question- can someone with no college just 4 months bootcamp and literally < 2 years experience join a top company and compete with peers who have more education, more experience ? or is wendy an exception? she must be very smart obviously, probably also work very hard, but she is also pretty cute lol, i bet that helps atleast a bit .

Some people are just exceptionally smart Also, only a small fraction of what you learn in college is useful in working a typical tech job. So I’m not sure how much on an advantage a 4 year CS degree is in reality

But there is just a lot of details and things. All those networking stuff, algorithms, graph algorithms and time space complexity. Can you learn this that easily? Or you just learn how to hack the interview

Yes, in fact, I learned these things better when prepping for my interviews than when I was learning them to get good grades.

Implying that her cuteness has anything to do with it is not cool. Intelligence, will, opportunity and a little coaching will take most people a long way. We generally don’t second guess all the white dudes that drop out of college to start companies, I wonder why.

Appearance however has to do something with it. There was a study about how better looking people are considered more clever. Not saying this is entirely the case but also wanted to fight the myth that they do not correlate

High attractiveness is not purely in the positive direction. It cuts in both directions. While it certainly can help in some ways, you can also be percieved to be perceived as highered for that reason and believed to be less intelligent than peers and were compensated with by the attractiveness.

It just goes to show that there is gender discrimination against men in our industry. Why is the bar for women so much lower than men? Netflix won’t even interview men with less than 3-4 years of experience. I have 9 yoe and 2 degrees from top 5 schools and couldn’t get an offer. This is pure BS. I’m sure a 4 month boot camp can top years at Berkeley and Stanford and all the skills I’ve been perfecting for almost 10 years while outputting 100s of thousands of lines of code per year. 🙄 Not sure why attractiveness is being discussed. She is average/normal looking.

Are you certain the policy about only hiring senior people applies to non software engineering roles?

Meetup qks Aug 24, 2019

Come on Bloomberg, this is one specific person. Are you 100% sure there isn’t one male somewhere in tech with a comparable story?
