My main contention with this question is that it doesn't sound like you are taking into account the rental process. Say something goes wrong at the house. As the landlord you will have to solve the problem. Sure you could hire someone, but you will have to call around and hire someone and hope they get the job done. And what about finding a renter when you are not there? I'd say buy a house wherever you are.
And if you cannot afford a house, buy a condo
Well bay area is out of hand and is highly overpriced. I dont want to dump that much money with a mediocre condo with 400 hoa and 1500 tax with maintenance cost as well. Thats why looking elsewhere.
