thinking of buying a house in east palo alto for proximity to fb. how is the crime there?
its better now due to bay area housing prices rising and gentrification, but it was one of the most crime filled parts of the bay area 10 years ago. I probably wouldnt buy a house there outside of investment properties
I’m shocked the area hasn’t turned around yet... I was driving by East Palo Alto after my interview at FB and that area looks and feels very rough. I’m sure the gentrification will eventually come though. I just don’t know enough about the area to know when it’s coming
The area has gentrified a lot in the last 10 years. The areas closer to Palo Alto proper are significantly more gentrified; houses sell for 1.4M+ and are generally safe, have a park etc. Then there are other areas that still feel unsafe and you wouldn’t want to walk around at night. The same is true of any other city, including SF. All places have their better and worse areas of course. The crime rates have dropped significantly: https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/01/02/how-east-palo-alto-shed-its-crime-rep-and-built-a-new-path-forward/ The main thing I haven’t seen talked about is the schools. Ravenswood is being closed, so all school age residents are bussed to Palo Alto Unified district (Paly and Gunn at high school, for example)
Just some clarification- Ravenswood still has 5 elementary school and a few mid schools, although they are closing two elementary this year (Willow Oaks and Brentwood). Those ES and mid school all has terrible ratings in 1s and 2s. The high school is Menlo-Atherton HS which shares with Menlo Park and yes, the richest town in US, Atherton and has a 8 rating. It’s true that Ravenswood kids can indeed choose to bus to nearby school district per Tinsley volunteer transfer program.
Thanks for the qualification workday, that’s actually really helpful :-)
Not too bad, just don't stop your car on the way home. Keep driving. If you need gas, drive to the next city.

Its a crime hub, everyday car break ins are norm. Even police is useless. Neighbourhood is filled up with these criminals doing their rounds on the bicycles. Just visit any parking lot and u can see glass shattered everywhere! You lookup the crime heat map per zipcode by simple google search. PS: I learned this thing myself the hard way.
But it will probably get better over time due to proximity to facebook. So good investment?
How? Then situation in SF should also have improved 🤔 For investment, maybe.
