it would be essentially airbnb for items. our intial launch would be focused two categories- 1) tools and home improvement and 2) sports and outdoor equipment. north star is to have every category on platform.

think about that pressure washer you bought for $400 that you have used once. that kayak taking up space in your garage. rent it out!

would you use this platform? would be free for users and renters. open to tips or suggestions.

There aren't too many things that are costly enough to persuade people to rent otherwise. Only house (airbnb) and car (uber/ lyft) are the viable options.

For tools, the big box stores already offer rentals. How are you(platform) playing cop w/ this one in a full blown he said she said scenario?

Selection and price are not great for big box stores.
We would have insurance on the platform and also get a deposit from the renter in case of damaged/ lost goods.

    • Not great? I've never failed to rent the tool I need from either Ace (for small things) or Home Depot. And I don't need to provide more than my credit card.

So far, the value prop isn't there for me.

Similarly, the last time I needed a kayak, I rented one.

Who assumes liability if that pressure washer injured someone or is fatal? What about damage to equipment or when it doesn’t perform per specs? A Home Depot can easily offer the same lease/rental option, with adequate distribution footprint and kill your business model?

We take a deposit from renters for damage and then we would have general liability insurance on platform. Home Depot only does tools, doesn’t have a desirable CX and locations are not optimized for city dwellers.

I get my tools from the tool library for free. Not sure how wide spread tools libraries are though
