Hey you beautiful Blinders,
I’m wondering what should be my salary expectations if I get an offer for a Sr level ux/product designer roles. Also, assuming I clear the interviews, should I come up with a number or let the recruiter tell first?
My tc expectation is around $380k - $400k. Is that high/low/about right? Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
Current tc - $190k
Yoe - 5.5 (L5)
Tia!
Update: Wow! This post gained more traction than I imagined. More importantly I’m impressed by the large numbers of civil, thoughtful and helpful discussions. Thank you so much 🙏🏽
My thoughts on the salary expectation after reading all the comments: While most of you commented that my expectations are high, I believe, as designers we must get paid almost as much as our SDE friends for the same level. Just because design is misunderstood or it looks like anyone can do it, doesn’t mean it’s easy. No Product can be truly successful with the engineering/design/product working alone. If impact is what a company cares about then everyone creating the impact must be compensated fairly and equally.
Let’s demand that we get paid what we deserve and not settle with the status quo.

What you’re seeing on levels.fyi also include inflated salaries from stock growth.
@NEVK44, That’s true. I joined FB during the pandemic, so I got cheap covid crash stock. My TC before the market correction was over 400k, so if you join during a cheap time, you also get more equity. For example every L5 offer may get $300k worth of stock over 4 years, but you end up getting more RSUs if you join when the stock is valued at a lower amount. It’s just a perk of joining a company when the stock is undervalued.
Good shit curburtc!! Hope you land it higher elsewhere 💰
WA state min wage is $14.49/hr. Warehouse associates are paid $18.49/hr. It’s not called slavery if people go in to work of their own choice and they get paid for their efforts. If you are so concerned about the lives of the warehouse workers, stop using Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot or any other big store because guess what genius, they’re all doing the same job and getting paid more or less the same. Amazon turns out to be more efficient because it also scaled too fast by comparison. For someone like you sitting on a $3000 Herman Miller chair in an air conditioned room the work people do in the warehouse can appear like slavery, but that’s the livelihood of millions of people who work day and night to make sure you get your boxes on time. Be grateful and learn to empathize.
You were smart enough to get hired at Meta. This shouldn’t be too hard to deduce.
