Hey @Hubspot

Couple questions before joining Hubspot
1. what are majority of engineers choose for @office @flex @home? what are the incentives?

2. In one of the doc it stated that you cannot work outside of US. Is that strictly enforced? not talking about permanently, like for a month or two during this pandemic. Do you know if Hubspot is tracking your IP or someone get a warning for doing that?

Been told by a colleague (who works outside the US) that he’s received emails from HR warning him about the legal complications involved while he was visiting family in another country and trying to get some work done. So apparently they do track when you’re on their VPN

This isn't true, it honestly just sounds like another case of hubspot trying to make sure their employees are always able to go into the office. I've worked for companies where I traveled all over the world for work, it doesn't matter where you are you still work as a US employee. The only issue is if you're say a contractor and you don't pay taxes on that money up front, as long as you're still taxed at the US tax rate and paid out by your home office it doesn't matter where you work from.

If this were true also, https://youtu.be/Wyceg0VYa-k that tech talk would have been in violation of their own policies due to US speakers in Dublin.

I think you’re misinformed, both about HubSpot and about the complications of having employees work from arbitrary countries. HubSpot generally needs to set up a new legal entity in each country where it will have full-time employees. This is a large amount of work for our people operations, finance, legal, and business operations teams. There are then various local labor and tax laws that HubSpot needs to comply with, such as paying payroll tax to that government. HubSpot also sets up a local bank account and local payroll, along with a million other tasks.

And in terms of people going into the office, all of our offices are shut down globally and they offered everyone the choice to be permanently full remote (from the set of countries where we can legally support this). So there is obviously no hidden motive to try to make people go to an office.

    1. Not sure of numbers in each camp, but I imagine the Cambridge office will be closed for a decent portion of 2021 the way cases are looking so it might not matter much. @home gets an additional $60/month stipend, @flex gets $30/month, and @office gets $0. You only have a permanently assigned desk if you choose @office, otherwise you get a floating desk when you come to the office.

    2. They sent an email explaining the complications with corporate taxes, health insurance, and various other things that make it impractical to allow people to work from other countries, even temporarily. Don’t think they’re actively tracking people, but if you get caught it’s a fireable offense.
