Spawar vs Qualcomm contracting

Jul 31, 2018 7 Comments

Hi All,
Got an verbal approval from spawar. Process to get an offer might take couple of months. 20+ years of experience, Ph.d. patents. How does Spawar offer compare with Qualcomm. Has any one been in this boat ?

Area: wireless communication system sw

Talking to hiring manager, they were suggesting pay around 130k but benefits are good. 5% 401k, nice insurance, 13 days of vacation, flex hours etc. Pay may be more with qualifications.

Btw : spawar is u.s. Navy organization based in San Diego

Any ideas

Qualcomm sucks in terms of job security. Most people I know there are not sure if they will have a job in 6 months. They will not hire seniors at all

That’s fair, you’ll definitely get job security at spawar, the war machine will trek on forever. If you can stomach the terrible quality of office, you’ll basically be coasting for the rest of your career.

you get 1% for every year of service. when you retire, let’s say you work 20 years for sparwar, you will get 20% of your highest salary

That sounds absurdly low for 20 YOE, even in SD. Doesn’t SPAWAR offer pension since it’s a gov position? I worked at spawar as a contractor for a few years, it’ll feel like an insane downgrade from Qualcomm in terms of what an office job should feel like. Rats, cockroaches, etc. I mean, it was used to build missiles and such back in WWII, but they just shoved cubes in and pretended everything was fine. Also, parking is an absolute nightmare. Unless you get in consistently by 7:30am, you’ll be parking across the street and walking for a good 10-15 minutes just to get to work.
