I've interned in tech and finance (citadel, js, hrt, jump, etc). New grad offers are higher for finance, but heard that tech outpaces finance in tc growth. Is that true?

TC: student, but for new grad offers: tech ~200k, finance ~400k

  • Finance pays more per year, tech pays more per hour.

If you're writing code in a financial firm, you can always switch to a tech firm later. If your new grad offers are so much higher in finance, I'd start with finance. I see lots of ex-finance people at meta.

    Depends on the job.

Tech Eng & product will outpace investment banking at low to mid levels.

However in finance you will make more in the upper levels vs tech.

If ur a trader / hedgefund / prop shop you can always make more than tech if ur good

  • Tech TC is very highly levered to stock performance. The past few years have been a massive bull market for tech stocks and this biases TC. The real question is what will tech companies do comp-wise to retain talent if we're in a recession. Finance firms all pay in cash so you're not as tied to the market. Also, prop shop performance tends to be inversely correlated with market performance so your TC is more likely to grow during tough times.
