Uber allowing to tip — am I now morally obligated to do so?

I know, I know, "typing is purely optional", but socially it seems in Ameeica it is usually not acceptable to not tip when there is an option to do so.

I'd much rather have Uber increase its price and pay the drivers more. Now the cost of a ride is not clear anymore upfront. Bottom line it probably gets more expensive for riders, except it doesn't look that way when you start the ride.

Anyone else having similar thoughts?

Tipping is the worst. Just give me a freaking price that comprises a decent wage for whoever is providing services upfront.

agreed. but then lyft can price rides $1-2 cheaper for the rider because they know the rider will tip and help pay some of the driver's salary at the end. then lyft is making the trip seem "cheaper" than uber, essentially using rider money as subsidization to fuel the competition. not to mention they use every possible chance they get to use this to hurt us publicly, if anything blame them not us. we just cant keep good things these days.

Like it's purely optional when you go out to a restaurant, except the waitress can't give you a 1-star score in the restaurant's app.

Definitely tip. Driving is hard work, and they provide a valuable service. I know I can afford it, so I feel that I should.

driving is not hard work dummy. our employers expect us to do it for an hour, every day, for free, to get to the darn office.

tipping is a social issue and it's a way for employers to push the burden of compensating employees onto other people. on the social side, it's subject to idiosyncratic norms.

as such, while I m happy to pay slightly more, I don't want to deal with the awkwardness of not knowing what it appropriate so I much rather that Uber and Lyft take care of those directly and charge me inclusive of those.
