Does executive MBA hold the same value as standard MBA?

Does it help climbing up the managerial ladder?

And does it help only if you have already been at managerial role or even IC roles too? If IC roles too, then, what yoe should anyone start considering it?

Thoughts please !!

I have an MBA so I’ll chime in. An MBA can open doors for you but it depends on what your goals are. If you’re trying to make a career switch + industry switch, an MBA can be helpful. That said, typically folks who do that go the FT route. Often they will try to get into Leadership Dev programs that groom you for SR mgmt - companies recruit for that. I wouldn’t recommend a FT MBA if you can’t get into a top 20 program. If you want to stay in your current industry and get more of a managerial/strategy role, than an MBA can help, especially if you don’t already manage people. There’s a bunch of good PT programs out there. Again, go with a well ranked one and go with one that specialization matches well with the industry/function you want. Some programs are better known for marketing, some for finance, etc. As for executive MBAs, I imagine those are best for people already managing teams or were put into senior roles and don’t have a solid financial/business background.

If you are relatively early in career FT MBA is more valuable than Ex MBA. If you are later in career Ex MBA has greater value, but it doesn’t allow to change careers. An ex-MBA has a lot of value if your company pays for it. Simply because spending money on you makes then value you more, promote you faster etc etc.

Exec and part-time are rarely worth it unless someone else is paying for it. Full time can be at the right stage (early) in your career and if you get into a top 10 program

The most value you get from an MBA program is in the network of your classmates. Second most value is career ramp early in your career (2-3yoe). Third most value is opening the door to new jobs at companies or in functions you previously did not have access to. You get relatively little to none of these things from part-time and exec programs. If you are just in it for the skills education, grab some textbooks and open source classes and self-teach.

No. An executive MBA from a top 10 program is the equivalent of a normal MBA from a 50+ ranked program - so, not to offend those graduates, but almost useless for *good* career opportunities. Really, save your time and money.
