careeer change

Oct 18, 2019 7 Comments

I have a major in communication and marketing! I love comms, marketing and branding but since I have joined the tech world, my closes friends became programers/engineers.

I was thinking about a career change: web development or UX/UI. Do you think its to late? Im in my mid 20s. Any advice?

UI/UX is fairly difficult to get a foot in the door though. Do you have any design/artistic experience when you were in branding/marketing?

A good stepping stone might be a copywriter at a tech company since you’ll be working with the designer and depending on the company a lot of the beginning product phases could involve you as well.

It’s not too late. Just a crowded space for junior designers.

Yes I do!!!!!! Also, I know it’s a total different road, but I was looking at PM and maybe that could fit with the diversification of my studies with my future tech studies

Well since you do, you can definitely make the transition easy :) most designers I know started in branding/graphic/visual design world.

Perhaps take a in person ux bootcamp? That could help. You can also self teach and create a case study based portfolio. That’s probably the biggest way to get your foot in the door. A kickass portfolio.

Not too late but your day-to-day will be drastically different between web dev and UX. Figure out what you’re more interested in.

Web dev will teach you how to create tangible things but you will need to relearn your entire skill set every three months. UX/UI involves a lot of user research but good design people make good product people and they are rare.

Web dev will have a higher TC but if you hate constantly relearning how to do your job then it’s not for you.

It’s never too late. Try an intro to programming class online and see if you enjoy it, then go from there.
