In addition, experienced highly skilled domestic workers are being hired less and less, as the more expensive option compared to the H1B workforce. And a Computerworld report from 2017 said that Apple was able to pay H1B visa holders as low as just over $50,000 a year – in an industry where the average was $93,000.

Also, Google will only ask about your employment status after you have already received and accepted an offer. They can't low-ball H1Bs as they don't know who will be on H1B at offer time. Complete bullshit.

Interesting. I’ve spoke with Google recruiters twice and recall one of them asked me whether I am a citizen or not. He said it doesn’t change how I am considered but they need to do it for legal purpose

"For experienced SWEs? I don't think so.
I was hired from overseas and nobody asked about my immigration details until weeks after I accepted the offer."

They did not ask you about your immigration details several weeks into the offer because they likely guessed you WOULD need a visa, so it was a given, and a non sequitur.

However, for candidates (experienced or not) who are recruited from WITHIN the US, this is one of the FIRST things they have to answer.

Surprised you are finding it hard to believe SO many first person accounts, ESPECIALLY when you haven't gone through the same process yourself.

I know slavery is a very strong word but it does allow for some degree of exploitation. If someone who hired you knows that you're not going to be able to just quit (without seriously disrupting life, family etc) he might push a little harder.

Arent the repurcussions same for americans?
What if u dont find the same kind of job later?
The only worry about H1B is getting fired. But then, big tech dont use such tactics.

They are the same, its equally distressing. Except an additional possibility of having to pack up all your belongings from a place you've considered home for many years. Companies don't, but maybe individuals in companies might.

Again, I agree with you when you say that you always have a choice.

This is a complete bullshit. Nobody cares and, most likely, nobody on your team even know your immigration status unless you tell them.
