Hey folks!
I’d like to get out of embedded, it pays peanuts, very little opportunities for remote roles and new grads on other CS fields make more than few senior embedded folks.

So how do I get started? e.g what technologies should I learn about? JavaScript? Cloud? SQL?

Any course recommendations? Coursera/udemy/Udacity?

I know how to program on C/C++/Python, have played around with Linux but most of my experience has been low level, no experience on anything Web.

  • Is web what you want specially? You can get out of embedded now with Python, but if you want to do frontend learn React.

    • Don’t go frontend if you know CPP well, it’s a monkey business. Hedges/HFT, some gaming companies like roblox pay well for cpp while preserving reasonable wlb

Haven't played around with web (neither backend nor frontend) but frontend doesn't sound that interesting to me at the time

Embedded is going to see the biggest growth over the next few years! IMO you're already in the best position to let industry trends come to you.

Pretty soon everyone is going to want more embedded engineers to create all those IoT things people have talked about for 15 years (and now the underlying HW performance is finally catching up to make it possible).

I may be crazy but I see better years ahead for embedded. Maybe play around with tiny ML edge device applications to keep your aim point ahead of that moving target called skill demand.

There has definitely been an upwards trend in opportunities, but I still think they are fewer compared to other fields and usually located in a few cities only, not open to remote, although it might also be a case of the greener grass on the other side :P

Build some web projects, help open source projects and send CVs i'm sure some will return 😁
Try MANGA type companiea they usualy don't care about the type of developing you've done

  • Why not try Apple or Google? They pay the same for embedded roles. From personal experience working on Android or ios internals is pretty interesting compared to copypasting yaml files and rest api stitching

Location 😕 don't really want to relocate and really like working remotely, neither google nor apple are remote friendly afaik, meta does have some remote roles I think but seems like there are more opportunities outside of embedded

What makes you say Apple & Google pay the same for embedded roles?
