Just had a phone screen this morning. 30 mins LP/behavioral and 30 mins coding. I think I failed the coding part. It was a LC-medium/hard (I guess) involving DFS. I was given a matrix of chars and asked to find out all possible words (similar to crosswords, but more flexible).. I was freaked out as I thought it's a dynamic programming question... At the end I used a few data structures (like hash table to store and check stuff), described what I would do, but did not have time to finish the full DFS.. I think I did OK on LP tho.. What's my chance to onsite? PS: expected level is L5 SDE
From trend going on with the interviews ...you have to get it correct with test cases, else it's a noi
I read this for online assessment, not for phone screen tho. I agree getting correct with test cases is very important..
It's called Boggle. It's a good question but you need to use a trie to make word searching efficient.
I did mention trie...do I can points for mentioning that? lol
Relax even if you don't make it past phone screen. You can interview with other groups. I failed one phone screen and couples of week later got call from another group.
I boggled a phone screen with amazon recently and was convinced I failed. Got the invite to the on-site a few days later.
were you able to finish the full code?
Similar story but it was a couple years back.
Wait!! What?? People really solve the Boggle Board problem in an Interview? I fear I should give up, unnecessary stress, and just emigrate to the Himalayas and accept sainthood and live in Peace!!
Practice it once and you'd need no more than 30 minutes for it. Assume the Trie API is already available
Wait!!! What?? Trie is a API? I always understood Trie is a Data Structure and I'd have to assume a Dictionary kind of an API that'll tell me if the alphabet combinations are forming meaningful words?
Rejection clearly, no worries my boi try again
Trie + Backtracking ?
I can't promise you'll pass (who knows what your interviewer is thinking), but you didn't bomb this. Trust me: I've done a lot of phone screens over the years, and the average candidate is completely clueless. Somebody who comes in and mentions tries and can code up even a half-assed DFS is better than 75% already.
When we reject like 99% of the people who apply, better than 75% is still a rejection.
That 99% includes resume screens, online assessments, etc. The phone screen pass rate is significantly higher (10-20%), and this includes the fact that more than half of the candidates who get even that far are totally clueless (I'm talking "doesn't know that char maps to ASCII in Java despite claiming 15 years working with Java" clueless). And, again, it depends on the interviewer's preferences and style from there. We weren't there; impossible to know.
Try again in six months.
