My nephew is a math wiz and overall a state topper but doesn’t know what to chose for college. We are suggesting investment banking or actuaries as wants to be within numbers. How is actuarial as a career and how much do they actually make? Google responses need to vary a lot.

Actuary was a sexy job before CS. Pay is much less, requires years of taking tests to move up the ladder, and the work itself is fairly boring. I’d strongly advise your nephew to focus on CS (alongside math) at school instead.

Source: I was an actuary and then switched to data science after about 4 years and best choice I ever made.

Applied to a tech company to be a data analyst. Overall skills translate well for a junior data analyst position (just make sure you are good at SQL/data structs). Got in the door and quickly moved up the ranks to data scientist (within that same company - then most recently as a sr data scientist at another company).

I see, my brother only knows sql. He only knows basics of python and no knowledge of data structures and algorithms.

  • Tell him to study Math or CS for undergrad then he can either get a job or go to grad school. I work with many actuaries, they are not too smart, is mostly about memorization.

Why are you suggesting investment banking if he's a "math whiz"? The people I know doing iBanking aren't even that good at math and it's a really stressful, potentially toxic career.

    Maybe you meant quant instead
