consulting to tech in DS

Oct 5, 2019 11 Comments

I am a new grad and started working as data analytics consultant. 2 months into my job and I already realized I made a bad decision. I spend hours on something that doesnt have any impact on my career. I am ready to switch.

Should I start applying for jobs right away or
Should I wait for a year and then start applying, especially if I’m looking into Data Scientist/Business Analyst/Data Analyst roles in FAANG, Microsoft?

  • Hey op I also was an analytics consultant at EY. I'm going to join Google soon but worked as a data scientist at a video game startup. I would highly suggest that route to you as you can make the role yours at a smaller company

    • To be clear I had interviews as a data scientist at Amazon Facebook and datarobot as well. And I wasn't actively looking for a job. I originally interviewed for a big data consultant role at gcp but I couldn't pass the case. However, Google was apparently impressed with my general cognitive ability and gave me a shot at TAM. You need to realize that your background now may not give you the technical foundation to be a data scientist or engineer. But your client facing experience will be a great opportunity to differentiate yourself from the engineers. Having a business and technical mindset is valuable for companies and is rarer than all but the top 10x engineers.
