what's the criteria upon which people get promotions at FB? For instance at Google it's based on Impact, Difficulty, and leadership.

  • Promotions depend on whether or not you're meeting the expectations at the next level for an extended period of time. Performance ratings are based on 4 axes - impact, engineering excellence, people, and direction.

    • If you’re on the line you have to show continued impact to avoid a promoting someone who won’t meet expectations. But if you’re clearly above the line you can get a promotion in a single 6 months cycle. Levels are hidden so it’s easier being treated at the next level if you act like it.

    I’m a data scientist in the analytics org so I’m an outsider, but for eng promotions appear to be a combination of 3 things also, in order of importance: 1) team product impact (bread and butter), 2) breadth of impact (aka scope), and 3) org contributions and communication skills
