#softwareengineer#product #softwareengineersalary #techcareer #tech What work does a PM do and what keeps the PM role exciting. For a fact i know its not hands on coding, but what does it entail. How are they recognized across. Is it tech heavy or more towards management, ppt , lifecycle tracking. And importantly whats the essential skillset to get into one, if coming from a non-SWE background.
Write specs, write planning docs, write OKRs. In general, higher level PMs set strategic direction for teams and orgs, lower level PMs write product specs for features.
How does the TC look like at 5-6 YOE
Google, Meta and Amazon salaries are there in Levels.fyi and they are pretty accurate for new hires. Lower if you just stayed there (of course stock appreciation more than makes up for it so far) if you have 5-6 years of PM experience, you maybe able to get L5 at Google or Meta or worse case L4
Non-SWE PMs have a fair shot. It is all about obsessing about the user and how to can align solving their needs with increasing revenue, engagement, adoption, profits for the company. If you are able to articulate and sell that, get it done, and are mostly correct (get results).. you’re good.
