To all seasoned Amazonians, I've just joined AWS as L4 sales rep. I'm looking to fast track my career by working hard and proving to my team with quantifiable results.

However from what I've heard, results are not the only thing that Amazon/managers look at here.

What would your advice be to someone who wants to expedite his/her career progression in Amazon?
- what are some specific actionable items
- things to look out for/focus on

Lol. Working hard is what a dishwasher does. You want to be fast? Invent. Take risk. But you’re too low level. So shut up and learn. Look at your total comp. they expect doing not thinking. They expect delivery not delight. To stand out you’ll have to politic. Can you do it? Probably not. Most can’t. Good luck

    I’m an ex amazon exec.

If you really want to work hard, don't do it for a company worth billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of employees where you're just another warm body.

Besides delivery and code quality, following are my suggestions:

    - Start working on your promo doc early on.. like 3 months into the company. Try to tick points with every big task..

    - Have at least bi weekly 1:1 with manager and go prepared, don't just stare at him.. looking for a great advice.

    - Be attentive in team meetings... Provide value to the discussions... Leave positive impact on your peers.

    - try to do code reviews as much as possible (in your extra time)

    - Have a good relation with your manager

@exalt, skip level visibility. Will managers take it positively? one of my ex-manager prefers people to work and die for her. She visibly hates if one of her team members talks outside her kingdom(even a friendly talk). She used to pip top talent if she senses they are growing. Not all managers care about your promotion. Unfortunately, What's in for them? - should be answered. ’Good for the company or you are more talented than one level above’ -- won't work with such managers. What's in for them?

Not hate. I work at Facebook and just do what's expected, nothing more. If I wanted to work really hard and have a fantastic career, I would do it at a startup that I believed in or at my own company.
