Join Amazon before 10/1?

Sep 8, 2021 5 Comments

I got an offer from twitch. The recruiter tries to convince me to start before Oct 1 and said it would allow me to be eligible for the merit salary raise next year. But the base they offered me is already close to the limit. Would the company raise the bonus in that case? Another concern is that joining before 10/1 would also mean that I will run into the performance review. It may be stressful for me to get onboard and deliver in such a short time. If I skip this review cycle, I am more confident to earn a good review and it may be good for my career. On the other hand, I heard that twitch is relatively more friendly than Amazon in terms of performance review. So maybe I shouldn't be worried.
What do you suggest? Shall I start earlier than Oct 1?

Not sure if the policy has changed since my time in Amazon but you donโ€™t skip the review cycle if you donโ€™t join by 10/1โ€ฆ you only skip the bonus and compensation adjustment part of the review cycle ๐Ÿ˜œ

I wouldn't worry about the performance review ๐Ÿ™‚. From my experience, managers are empathetic about ramp up time and their expectations reflect that. Also, there's no stack rank at twitch so I'm sure you'll be fine.

I donโ€™t know others feeling toward this. But Iโ€™ve been around this place for 6 years. My first role I started in June, was able to ramp up and received what I felt was a fair review my first year. Last year I switched roles right before the review cutoff ( Oct) and I could tell my manager was going to give me an average review, as the team was only 4 folks, and each person had been on the team 3+years and COVID; so if anyone was going to be a top performer it was them.

All of this to say, start when you think you are ready to start. If you start in October you better hit the ground running as reviews are in January. And all managers just remember what you did in December.

Everything the recruiter says is BS. Join if you donโ€™t want a break, otherwise take a break.
