So I’ve been freelancing in UX for years at $150/hr making my total salary on average $350k. I’ve freelanced for Google, Netflix, Agencies, etc.

Anyway, ex-coworkers at Google got me to interview for a Staff Designer role. Just finished and waiting to hear back from hiring committee. Yesterday a friend at Facebook got me a quick chat with a recruiter who explained the process and after looking at TC here and other places it looks like that sits around $300k-ish. Don’t even want to bother go through lengthy interview is salary is likely less.

Also Amazon and eBay reached out too. After Google, I just don’t want to bother with the interview processes if it’s what I’m already making freelance.

Any thoughts? (Besides I’m over paid as a freelancer)

      Thanks for the insight.

Came out of college and got fulltime ux role at an agency, jumped around to a few different agencies over the first 6-8 years ... making lots of connections and proving to people I’m a good strategist/designer.

One point I quit one of my agency gigs and the client I was working with asked if they could hire me freelance and asked for a number. Just said $150/hr and they said yes. From then on I just post on Linkedin that I’m looking for a gig and someone I’ve worked with in the past is working at a new company and offer me a role.

  • Maybe the high end of IC6, but definitely not an IC5.

I tried to build a brand around my ‘studio’, but since I didn’t want to project manage or handle other aspects of the work I dropped it and just indicate on LinkedIn that I freelance directly at individual companies. They have more name recognition than I’ll ever build and I just leverage my connections anytime I need a new role.

Do you enjoy doing work as a freelancer? May depend on the company but usually the types of projects you work on and meetings you’re in tend to differ from an in-house team. I’ve worked at several large companies and have never worked closely with our contract/freelance UX people though I have enjoyed my projects.

I’ve enjoyed it because I’ve mainly lead projects as a more senior team member. I’m helping manage the work and presenting to clients/leadership so I make a nice salary and don’t deal with much internal politics, perf, etc. Everyone there knows I’m just trying to make them look good and not steal their future promotion. Over the years they all work at other companies and they remember liking my work and attitude and ask my to join their new gig.

Usually with each client I hit a 1-2 year max window before I need to join them full-time or take a 6 month break. That’s when I poke around on LinkedIn and find my next role.

I’m in a very similar situation. How did it go? What did the offers end up looking like and what did you choose to go with?
