Growth at Google va FB

Sep 22, 2020 20 Comments

I have offers from FB and G for L6 roles.

How hard are promos to L7 at these two companies? Would love to get some perspectives.

Thanks!

  • L7 is on a different level and the expectations are really high. Most people never get there. Having said that FB in general is faster when compared to Google but WLB wise, no one can beat Google.

  • FB is (much) better for a chance to be E7. But as of now, the question like how many years to be E7 doesn't make a sense. The median is infinite as many of them don't get a promotion. So, as of now, congrats for the great offers! Join as E6 and earn exceeding rates consistently for 1+ years. Then your manager will tell you about a promo plan for E7. The promo packet for E7 requires a stamp from VP. It also needs a bar check across the orgs.

The more interesting stat is for those who made it from 6 to 7, how much time it took. My feeling is that it’s probably 3 years or less. Otherwise if you look at whole 6 cohort many are not necessarily interested in moving to 7 (e.g. don’t want to manage large org).

    • Agree. Those who made it usually took 3 years from my anecdotes.

Promotions to L7 are tough at either company. That being said FB would be a better place (for faster) promotion to L7.

  • There are more L7 ICs at FB than at Google despite Google being 5x larger. Your path to L7 at Google would likely involve switching over to management.

    • I should have mentioned but I'm in management. That's another dimension where I can use feedback.

Is it easier to grow to L7 as manager or as an IC?

    • Easier as IC since growth to M2 is limited to what the organization needs and whether it is growing fast enough (or if an existing M2 leaves and creates an opening)
