I hear things about good WLB and it's rest and vest. How good is the WLB really? Like if I just work 2 hours a day and slack off, and just keep giving the same update during the daily stand-ups, will I still not be fired?

Interested to know how is day-to-day working like at Google.

  • Tons of people with electrolytes imbalances due to a lack of potassium.

GCP is struggling against AWS due to a lack of ๐ŸŒ.

I 100% agree GCP's primary competitor is Azure and honestly Azure is absolutely amazing.

Is that why AWS is still the market leader?

I work consistently between 50-60 hrs each week. Lack of clear leadership and allergies to use of authority make getting agreements difficult over just about any issue. I feel like we spend an inordinate amount of time setting scope and direction rather than getting work done. I find this stressful and frustrating. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I hear people saying G is all about coasting and collecting fat TC. This has not been my experience. Eng PM/PGM. L6. $430K. Bay area.

Based on my engagement and time spent, 50 to 60 hrs is a norm. Especially late night meetings. Certainly not a place to to coast.

Is it possible that itโ€™s different for swe who are less involved in the planning phases?

I think Google is good at adjusting to what people are looking for in their work-life. I have reports that are gunners, they want to advance quickly and own big projects and are willing to work for it. They tend to get higher ratings and promo because of that. I also have reports that have other things going on in life and can't put quite as much time in and that is fine too. They tend to stay at level longer and their ratings don't move up quite as fast. Even the ones that want to put in less time are still likely around 40 hours per week.

I recently switched from Fb/Meta to Google and I can already see a difference in wlb. Google is way more relaxed than Meta. That being said, itโ€™s definitely still doing actual work - around 40 hours per week at least.

However, Iโ€™m finding Google to be very stingy in terms of its policies/perks and benefits. As a company, it doesnโ€™t feel very open and connected and transparent either.

For starters, the internet reimbursement policy, phone policy, not being able to order the monitor size available on stuff because you need approval, lack of good snacks in Mk, having to pay for sports facilities for work sports, no business class travel, etc.

Makes me sound spoilt but we all know what the world of tech is like so these things do matter. All of this stuff adds to the overall experience and adds up. Did not expect this vast difference moving from Meta to Google
