Its just a poll but I am also looking for comments.

According to me Tesla is a revolutionary company with mission to save the world.

Why the best engineers (especially SWE) wanna join G/FB/Apple/AWS/RH/Hedge Funds/Uber/Lyft/Azure/LinkedIn and not Tesla.

Tesla pay is lower but not that low to ignore the company’s impact. Amazon also pays lower but all prefer to work there over Tesla.

Over past couple of days I have got some nasty comments like “Fuck the mission and go with TC/cash”

I think American’s don’t appreciate and value the revolutionary talent they got. I know back in 2010-2011, Facebook and baby Zuck, Google and larry-sergei got so much love from media and all the people in USA. Why hate Elon and Tesla? I think Elon has significant followers but a lot more haters.

Following videos may change your mind about Elon and Tesla (and also the mission)

Did you cry after watching video 1?

  • If a company is impactful, it should be able to pay its employees a fair TC.

I have never considered Tesla but their levels.fyi reports seem low. Senior engineers make 209k? It is like new grads at Google and Facebook

By limiting the talent pool to those willing to take bad terms, Elon is getting what he's paying for long term.

The codebase and tech debt is a growing nightmare. Good engineers have other options, usually with exciting missions but higher pay and better WLB.

  • Tesla is bad wlb, lower TC for most, and SWE iis not at the core of the company. If you care about impact and not YC, Why not take a job at a hospital, they actually save lives....

  • Think about this: if the company is impactful, it should either have good revenue (if it’s mature) or good funding (from investors who believe in the passion). Why can’t it pay good money to employees? That’s because the leadership is greedy and keep money in their own pocket. People generally don’t want to work for greedy leaders who don’t share their profits

    • Not true. Some projects like pure b2b software have higher margins and especially long term projects where the solution is unknown have fewer people willing to take bets on them, hence lower margins, ergo employees have to put more and believe in the mission

Your response is hard to follow. A risky and potentially low margin business is a bad idea.

Successful companies are balanced on a risk/reward basis, therefore they can pay well for talent (if risk is high, investors pay, if risk is low, the market/margins pay).

  • Tesla over FB/Hedge funds anytime. TC isn't a factor but team matters more than the company name imo if you really want to make impact.
