For most places, UXD has the edge in comp. For the handful of companies that hire Quant UXR, they will have the edge.

Why does UXD typically have the edge?

I don't set the comps, just telling you what it is. In general roles that are closer to the revenue source tend to command higher comp. For most tech companies their app is their revenue so UXDs are closer to the money.

I am a UX researcher. I worked at Facebook and the pay was much lower than UXD (half RSUs). At Google is comparable or even a little more. L6 UXR making around 880k (with stock growth) original offer was 500k

I don't agree with the comments because of several reasons:
    - UXR often requires a Master's and ideally a Ph.D. = comp is higher
    - Good Researchers with experience are much harder to find than Designers
    - in my experience, a Senior+ Researcher gets more than a UXD

If you just say you're a researcher because you have done some user tests etc., we're not talking about the same thing.

It might depend on the size of the company and if you have a phd or not. Lately research has been trending lower. Not sure why since most people will have a masters.

Could be that many places hire junior researchers who do only usability testing in a scrum team. I’ve seen a lot of these positions.
