Feeling like shit

Jul 29, 2021 35 Comments

Last summer I interned at a pre-IPO company, and didn't end up getting a return offer. It really made me doubt my abilities as a SWE - if I can't even get a new grad offer, how will I grow to senior?

I ended up clearing interviews at FB, and joined (mainly leetcode and luck). While on paper that sounds great, how do I stop feeling like a huge imposter? I missed out on huge IPO gains as well :(

Waitโ€ฆall you got was a FB offer? One that nearly everyone on this forum would do anything for? SAD! Youโ€™re in for a lifetime of struggle and hurt

I know, I'm super thankful for that. But I feel like a huge imposter here, I don't know if I conveyed that in my post. I can only leetcode, seems like my dev skills are trash

As someone who also didn't land a return offer after his internship years ago, and has since had a pretty good career, don't worry about it. Just do your job, be excited to learn and keep growing. What has happened in the past does not define your future.

You're clearly motivated enough to at least Leetcode, just do your work. Internships are weird where you have to ramp up within a few weeks in order to really set yourself up for success. You'll have more time to ramp up full time. And who knows, maybe the company didn't have a culture conducive to your success and growth either. Just do your work, network and keep growing. You'll be fine, man.

My bet is this is not the last time you will let go an opportunity and end up regretting. If you joined the pre IPO, and did not like working there, you would regret not joining FB. Besides people you know will make you feel like shit for turning down FB for something else. Enjoy your time while it adds value to your resume and you can go for better positions in smaller companies.

Having worked both in startups and huge companies, I have seen people of all kinds everywhere, the passengers and the rockstars. Don't worry, put aside self doubt, it's gonna be absolutely fine. Congrats!
