Netflix makes a lot of money from all the cool shows, that i know, but that has nothing to do with tech

As a tech product, Netflix is basically just a youtube ripoff where only Netflix can upload videos. All they need to do is copy youtube, so why is Netflix considered a top tier tech company?

Because FANG without the N would not be safe to use.

Also: it’s not really a tech company. At least not according to it’s CEO. More like a media/content company with very strong tech. But that’s all just semantics really.

  • You could say that about any tech company/product. Innovation isn't always something new and shiny.

Netflix has a different scaling challenge in that it has to stream much higher definition content than on Youtube. Different recommendation algos. They also spend a fair bit of time on OSS which is quite good architecture wise.

You clearly don’t understand systems design, scaling plus requirements are much different between the two services.

Best codec, best CDN, best recommendation algorithm, best UI. Pioneer of microservice and cloud computing at this scale. We were fully in the cloud even before Amazon retail was fully in the cloud. We are a small company relative to other FANG, but we are best at what we do. And Amazon prime isn't even close. If you think it's that easy, why haven't Amazon beat Netflix?
