But the good news is outside of Amazon, FB, Google, DEs in most companies are just considered a type of SWEs who have expertise in building, scaling, managing Data Systems. And hence expectation, interview are not very different from SWEs. And salary is same too.
I am currently a DE at Amazon but I get calls for SWE positions all the time. Remember that you must possess the SWE skills and knowledge though (reflect that in resume). Example: Coding experience, OOP experience and design, System design, Software engineering practices in general: Design patterns, CI CD, build, code review, code promotions, mentoring (if senior) etc.
