Currently a data engineer with 2.5 YOE coding in Python and AWS. If I apply for SWE (backend) roles, will I get interviews for SDE2?

Hey OP, I believe your full YOE has been at Amazon? I know that working at Amazon as DE can raise you this question, as a lot of Amazon DE positions are very much Analytics focused and much away from “Engineering” scope of the DE role.

But the good news is outside of Amazon, FB, Google, DEs in most companies are just considered a type of SWEs who have expertise in building, scaling, managing Data Systems. And hence expectation, interview are not very different from SWEs. And salary is same too.

I am currently a DE at Amazon but I get calls for SWE positions all the time. Remember that you must possess the SWE skills and knowledge though (reflect that in resume). Example: Coding experience, OOP experience and design, System design, Software engineering practices in general: Design patterns, CI CD, build, code review, code promotions, mentoring (if senior) etc.
