Google is opening up Maps so game developers can create the next Pokémon Go

Niantic didn’t have the mapping itself - from what I know/told it was using Google’s maps and feeding back really valuable data - walking routes, speed, local points of interest/gathering, etc - effectively crowdsourcing the gathering of that data through people playing games (Ingress initially). This just opens that data gathering. I doubt it will effect Niantic’s core competencies and selling points of its games, although I think that location games themselves have jumped the shark but augmented reality games will be popping up everywhere now.
