There was a reason you didn't see Pokemon Go real world clones all last year. Nobody else had the mapping. Now everybody will!

    Niantic didn’t have the mapping itself - from what I know/told it was using Google’s maps and feeding back really valuable data - walking routes, speed, local points of interest/gathering, etc - effectively crowdsourcing the gathering of that data through people playing games (Ingress initially). This just opens that data gathering. I doubt it will effect Niantic’s core competencies and selling points of its games, although I think that location games themselves have jumped the shark but augmented reality games will be popping up everywhere now.

      That's why it's interesting. They could have kept it with their own offshoot that they are invested in but now basically enabled all the competitors. Wonder what Niantic thinks of this
