from what im understanding, if you have not worked with the person who referred you, or especially dont even know that person in real life, your candidacy, despite being "referred", will not be treated any differently besides that they may (or may not) guarantee a response. but seeing a lot people here offering to give referrals to strangers make me wonder if my understanding is wrong? i mean, they are definitely trying to help, and i appreciate people trying to be good. but just trying to understand if such help really works for the candidates or they merely just generate extra cash for the referrer? #referral can the hr or hiring managers or people who are familiar with the matter answer the pool? for those of you who answers "yes referrals always work" can you comment how big your company is and for which positions?
Thanks for this question

Referrals at our company should get you a phone screen by HR. Our system asks you how you know the person, but if you are linkedIn with them, they are a professional connection. That's it. By the same token, it's not the best way to try to get in the door. The best way is someone internal who knows the hiring manager directly recommending you to them.
I take recommendations/referrals from employees and if I work on freelance I also take referrals, sometimes it turns out onto a great hires, sometimes not, I explore and network work with a lot of people
Referrals move your resume directly from the applicant tracking system to the candidate tracking system. It's one step closer to an interview, but not the most effective way. The best way is for someone to do an employee referral and follow up with the recruiter as to why the person is a good fit. If I get an email from someone I know backing a candidate up, I will most likely reach out. This holds true even if the employee doesnt know the referral too well.
if the employee doesnt know the candidate too well, as an hr, why would you trust the referral quality?
The employee conducting the referral gets a bonus. Even if the employee doesnt know the candidate too well it is worth a shot for me since I can earn trust long term if the candidate is hired. The previous success will drive more referrals and make my job easier.
