been working closely with my manager on project management for the team. just learned that my manager will hire a new project manager reporting to her, and i will report to this new PM. does this mean i am not good enough for a promotion opportunity? feels like an extra layer now added to the hierarchy and makes it even more difficult to move up. been working more than two years with this team now, and didnt get any directional guidance on career growth.
if anything, asking the question face to face will put them on the spot and you can usually tell by their reaction if they are being honest.
Thanks - I am a bit hesitant to find the the right time to bring this up. Based on previous one on one conversations I had with her, I realized that I need to find the perfect timing (times that she is less stressed or grumpy); otherwise my work life would become miserable again.
Thanks for taking your time to respond :)
You are good. Don’t doubt yourself first.
Thank you for your kind words 😭
Are you a developer or project manager?
It’s project management, but my title is not project manager, since my managers title is already “manager”. Can’t have a manager report to a manager.
I think the relationship between you and your manager may already be deteriorating, and likely worsen after the new project manager comes in. Definitely start interviewing. Perhaps lean more into product management?
It could be a good opportunity to learn from someone with specific skills or experience to grow your own skillset. There are times when a manager will seek outside skills to further a project or fill in gaps. It’s not necessarily a reflection on your aptitude or potential but could reflect on what your manager believes is necessary for the team
A while back I faced a similar situation and I approached my manager to ask why they had hired a PM, rather than promoting me as I had been managing projects already. The answer was clear, that although I had over 10yrs of experience; my skill set was much to technical for the role. It was disheartening but then I spoke to PM’s with years of experience leading projects and learned that I needed to augment my skills. I took a PMP boot camp and moved on to manage projects at other companies and after a few years I realized that I rather enjoy the technical aspect of my profession and have switched back to a Technical role. Which is a long way of saying, if at first you don’t succeed, learn what skills are missing and be ready for the promotion inside your current company or outside.. keep on going, I am sure you will be ready next time the opportunity arises
Thank you for sharing. I am starting to realize project management may not be something I’d truly enjoy. I can do it and be happy to check off things, but it doesn’t excite or grow me somehow. I am looking into a more technical role as well. As I have been pushing others to deliver things long enough, and I find myself enjoying deliver something of my own work

That might mean your manager is looking to expand!
Can you elaborate?
Your manager might be looking to expand (maybe more headcount-more budget-new initiatives) and hence looking to hire. Might be thinking, you are not ready for the next level, so hiring your new manager and maybe more people down the road. I’m just speculating. Why don’t you ask her about your promotion and explain your worth?
