Hi everyone, I hope all is well! I recently joined a company where I’m a business intelligence analyst. I don’t have much experience with sql besides taking courses and self learning but no actual work experience (manager knows that). This is my third week and I was given 3 projects so far, on two of the projects, my manager had to help me or change the sql code. Is this something that usually happens when you are newer to programming/sql or is it only me?

not a problem at all. your manager or senior coworkers are there to help and mentor you. eventually you should learn and become less dependent but ramping up is part of the process.

    • Take all the help you can get while you are new. But at the same time, document everything and be as organized with your notes as possible. In my experience, managers love to help and enjoy seeing you apply what they teach. However if they have to teach you the same thing more than once, they will remember it.

I am a manager a and I do pitch in sometimes if my reports are having issues.

Just make sure you learn from this and improve in future.

This should not be an issue at all unless it becomes a regular pattern.

Managers in tech want to show off that they could do some work. Most of the time they’ll end up doing a bad job but you may have to put up with the manager at least until you find another job or team

  • So long as you understand why they made those changes, such that they don't need to correct it in future, you're totally fine.

  • Don’t think if you need that much help you’re not competent. Keep notes, learn , appreciate. They will do this for a while and then stop, by then you’re expected to have mastered the basics. Think of this as a ramp up phase
