Why are SSN and Medicare taxes taken out from an H-1B visa holder's paycheck? Is there a legal way out to not to pay them? If not, then when and how are these taxes helping it's payers? Please explain in simple terms. No trolls please. Thanks in advance.

  • I wouldn't call it fair but you signed up for it willingly. You can choose not to work in this country

  • As a foreign national getting a privilege to work in USA, H1b holders should pay extra tax.

They do pay foreign nationals on par with Americans. They’re required to per visa law and are subject to frequent audits to ensure its true.

I take it you’ve never been involved in recruiting. I did college trips for microsoft for 10 years before moving to google. If you think MS can fill its open positions only with Americans you’re fucking clueless or Microsoft’s standards have slipped many orders of magnitude since I left. Go to a college recruiting event and be prepared to collect hundreds of resumes and think “holy shit I might only hire one or two of these people at best”.

  • Govt is assuming that you have intent to live here long term, as working visa is dual intent. Another reason is that despite these taxes, there is no reduction in immigration demand, so they have leverage.

You work in a country and you pay the taxes of that country. Simple as that. Don’t like it -go work elsewhere

No one signs up for this voluntarily. Taxation is theft.

If taxes are a contract, where is my signature and consent? Where can I hold the government accountable for breach of this contract? The Medicare and Social Security funds are running on IOUs, I will never see that money that I supposedly put away for later, that is breach of contract. In fact, the roads, police, and fire you speak of are such a small part of taxation (about 3%). Most goes to military spending, entitlement spending, and interest on the debt. I didn't consent to any of that and it is unsustainable.

    • It is an adhesion contract. You consent by remaining a citizen.
