I personally love working at Apple, started a year after school and don’t really have complaints. The products we make are cool, coworkers are smart, work is fulfilling and WLB is good. Each year we release new products and features and watching them come to market is exciting and rewarding.

However.. being on Blind and basically everywhere, it seems like Google is the gold standard. Everyone is crazy about their fun campuses, high salary and quirky interviews. So my question is, is Google really that great? Although I have no plans as of now, I may give Google a shot in the future.

And I don’t mean disrespect and I know Google engineering is top notch but honestly I feel besides their search engine and older products like maps and gmail; their products have not really impressed over the last 10 years or so.

So what’s the reality like at Google? Would like to get some perspective from the fabled Googlers themselves.

Everyone is chasing the cheddar because they are fundamentally unhappy. If you dig it, stay put, you only have to answer to yourself.

Google is incredibly engineering driven, as opposed to companies like amazon that are incredibly customer driven. This means you get to engineer really beautiful solutions but often you think very long term and move slow because of how tech focused you are, which is unsatisfying to some people that like to see a direct business/customer impact on the things they build

    • Google was a bunch of coasters who spent their time nitting each other’s design docs and cls. Generally people would crank out design docs then try to get lower leveled people to do the implementation so they could demonstrate leadership and get promoted. Things moved slowly because people were working 30 hours a week, everything non trivial required a design doc, and code outside your team would get bogged down in waiting for OWNERS approval

I think google should let everyone work there. There should be no selection process or filtering. It is inhuman to let people go through so much pain. Just like how we should allow all people to immigrate to US. Why borders and stuff like selection to an exclusive club.

Sarcasm detected. Reason for sarcasm not detected. I don’t think anyone in the thread is feeling entitled to working there. It is more of a musing if it’s worth preparing for the super hard interview

Why do you say so? Nvidia is pretty great but really looks like a one trick pony atm. One of the best hardware companies though I will give you that
