  • Yes, as a manager for AWS I saw the hire to fire play out a few times. The previous post saying that it only happens to “low performers” is BS. It’s about numbers, so if you’re a good performer but the team is close and have been together a long time the manager may chose to eject the newer person in the team.

Amazon has a very bad rep for having pip culture but honestly only clear low performers or borderline performers get pipped. I've never seen good performers get pipped. So the answer is no, If you pay your dues, you'll be safe.

But "good performers" are primarily judged based on how much they deliver. So if by bad luck you get stuck in a project with technical problems which are out of your control (like a bug in a different system your service is interacting with), then you didn't deliver shit at time. You lack on "deliver results" and tagged as underperformer, while the truth is it was out of your hand.

Lol … that’s not completely true. You can be in focus or pip any time. It all depends on your relationship with your manager.

That does not happen. You have at least a year to establish yourself in the team. If around that time you are not contributing you’ll be at risk. You’ll know where you stand by then, and can pre emptive transfer or leave company if it’s not right for you. If it is right for you tho you’ll always be happy you gave it a try. It’s been the best decision career wise I ever made.

I worked with them directly. Again, I didn't have all the data points that the SDM might have on the SDE, but as their PM I didn't see the individual as a low performer.

You were a pm you definitely were not equipped to understand if they were performant or not.
