Coding challenge is a practical evaluation. They'll give you a desc. of what you need to do. e.g. they have a webserver that you can hit to get a code. You need to manipulate/process the response and send additional requests to the webserver with your results until you reach a terminal point. You'll need to write all this from scratch but are allowed full access to internet.

The 3 hr practical session is part of the onsite interview. They put you through HR, design Interviews and in lieu of whiteboarding the leetcodes, you do a 3hr practical.

If it’s part of the on-site then, I would go for it.

  • For BE we would ask you algorithmic questions and evaluate you on time/space complexity of your solution, see how well you identified and addressed edge case etc.
For FE we would typically give you a working code with some bugs in it - and see if you can troubleshoot. Or ask you to use an API while building a quick component. We would evaluate you on working solution, code composition, adhering to design/responsiveness, memory leaks etc
