Is it a stupid idea to open the country (USA) back up by Easter?

Mar 25, 2020 48 Comments

- We are now officialy labelled the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic by WHO (along with Italy).

- Our medical staff can’t obtain enough ventilators / respirators to save their lives.

- The President have not enacted the Defense Production Act when it’s so critically needed right now to boost Mask / Test kit availability.

Seriously what is Trump thinking?

Trump wants America reopened by Easter. That could badly backfire on the economy https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/25/business/economy-recession-coronavirus-trump-easter/index.html

'Where the hell are the ventilators?' Keilar responds to Trump https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2020/03/24/trump-easter-fox-news-coronavirus-sot-vpx.cnn

We’ll have 50 million people going hungry in a month if we don’t release it vs 10 million dead if we do. Tough call.

    • 1918 flu killed ~50 million people (3% of world population) and 615K Americans (~1%).

The outbreak exploded when Philadelphia had a parade despite government lockdown warnings.

Hopefully the tolls of history has taught us a lesson. Definitely did not for Trump.

That chart in Philadelphia vs St Louis in 1918 tells a different story than most people think - Philadelphia got through the bulk of it in a month and rapidly went to zero cases while St Louis had cases for 4 months and didn’t hit peak for 3 months. The total dead difference was marginal (5000 out of a city of 1.5 million). I’ll take Philadelphia.

The way you worded your question clearly indicates you are not interested in obtaining the objective answer. Rather, you are interested in injecting as much bias as possible in your direction.

I think that stopping our whole economy is an overreaction, and Trump is correct to push for a return to normalcy. I also think a lot of people here will disagree with Trump no matter what he says, simply because he's Trump. If he says the sun rises in the east they will find a way to politicize it.

The economy doesn’t have to be shut down. We can still buy online. Most things people need don’t have to be done in person. The only necessary sacrifices are the small businesses that never made an online presence and people who work with others (e.g. barbers).

You can’t just say “we’re going to be done” and be done. That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.
