I’m so annoyed that everyone wants to do a streaming service. I understand why but it makes users mad. For an example, I won’t get NBCUniversal. It’s just dumb. I only have HBO Go during game of thrones. I guarantee you this will increase pirating. Disney+ is genius. Netflix has a good backing. Hulu is good too (owned by Disney now). CBS is starting one and I hear a bunch of networks want to do their own too. When will they realize that consumers will be priced out if everyone has their own thing?

That will pass. Currently studios are overoptimistic and think they will make a lot by rolling out their “Netflix”. The trick is - they won’t. There will not be enough customers to cover the cost of running the service + loss of licensing revenue. What is especially interesting is that show creators usually get a revenue share so studios are not only losing money but also souring relationship with the creators.

Netflix dwalfs HBO in revenue. Don't kid yourself on those international TV subscribers. HBO barely gets $1 per user.

And Nielson tracks TV numbers by running surveys in their sampling households that they pay. It's a dinosaur company trying to survive in digital era.

@HBO guess what service I subscribe for one month a year? Subscribe, watch new seasons of Silicon Valley/GoT/Westworld, unsubscribe. While I cannot unsubscribe from Netflix - because every weekend me and my kids need our Saturday morning cartoon (3Below is ok, She-Ra is nice, looking forward to next season of Dragon Prince, Transformers series is coming out next year).

      Breadth of contents is important.

  • Every streaming service combined costs less than a decent sized cable TV package, and people still pay for that shit.

    • When the position is "no one will pay for it because it's too expensive", "people are already paying more" is a great argument.

“I’ve noticed it to be the elderly folks who don’t want to stream or get streaming devices.”

Yes. And they’ll be dead soon.

Most of these streaming services won't get enough audiences to survive. Not unlike the search engine war. There may be a few winners as content is exclusive. So far, only Netflix is a lock. None of the others are profitable, not even close.

Although not officially decided, Netflix will likely lose Friends end of the year and it will be exclusive to WMs upcoming streaming service.

@HBO trick is - customers will not care about Netflix losing Friends. They are not subscribing to watch Friends, they are watching Friends because it’s there. It is same as browsing the TV channels - you keep skipping channels out of boredom and eventually settle for something random. Customers will browse Netflix and watch something else. They will not leave for a new service just to watch Friends. Or they will try a new service but forget to cancel Netflix.
