My org went remote. They told me I can move anywhere within the US. Currently living in LA where my team is based. I went to college in NYC—All my friends live there and have been begging me to move, but I’m concerned about COL. I make 200k and I’m 23 with no kids or loans. Is it worth the hike in taxes and COL? I’m lonely and don’t have any friends in LA…seems worth it right? I’m also concerned about alienating myself from the rest of my team, but they assured me it’s fine. I will also have to work west coast hours which might suck

Have fun for a few years.
I live in NYC and I am living pretty well with 130k TC
There are many affordable parts of NYC (remember lots of people live in NYC, have tons of fun, and make way less than you).
There are many job opportunities in NYC too. It’s the largest tech city outside of SF! If you find that your TC is too low after moving, you won’t have a problem finding a better paying job in the city :).
On lifestyle / west coast hours:
1) Is everyone remote? If so, then moving to NY won’t change much.
2) west-coast hours is not a deal-breaker. 11–7est (8–4pst) is decent too. Almost everything is open late in NYC. I work with SF teams often, and it’s really manageable.
3) all your friends are here! It’ll be a real blast.
4) I’m sure you already know this, but the weather is very different (brr it’s cold here). Are your ready to accept the weather changes?
That’s nothing like the Bay Area where there are like 50 companies that will pay you 300K+ as Senior SWE not to mention countless startups
