Hi guys
I’m a Project Engineer L1 designing HMI for process control system in Houston, TX. My background is mechanical engineering so what i do now is not related to my major and I’ve never worked as a mechanical engineer before. I graduated on May 2020.

I’ve been wanting to switch job really because I don’t see a lot of growth in my current role. I only got a 4% raise this year and 0.007% last year bc of the pandemic, and people at my level take at least 4 years to move up. My current TC is $72.8k. I’ve been here for 1.5 year.

But then I’ve found out something that I enjoy doing. For awhile, I’ve been passionate about data analysis ever since I worked with Excel and become famous at my Excel expertise in two companies that I’ve worked with. They’ve really valued my unique skill in the team. The jobs didn’t actually require but I exceeded the expectations just because I love doing things on Excel. I can do data querying, transforming, manipulating, pivot table, visualization dashboard.

Now that I realized those are the skillset of a Data Analyst so I’ve been contemplating about switching my career to Data Analyst.
I’ve been taking courses on Coursera and learning Sql and Tableau. I really enjoy and find it easy to tune in with.

What do you think I should do?
Should I apply to another similar job to what I have or switch career to become a data analyst which takes more work but I think it’s what I’m going to enjoy more?
I also want leverage with my current salary if I make the switch. Is that possible with an entry level data analyst?
Please advise.

List all of you data analysis experience in your previous roles in your resume. Have a portfolio, prob tableau public dashboard, look into roles at current company and get in contact with that manager. Last is to cold apply. You should make at least the same salary as a data analyst
