how do you look back on your decision to leave msft?

for me, it is the best decision I have ever made to my career and my financials. the only regret is I should have left Microsoft way way earlier. I spent there 7 years and my level was 64 (sr sde) when I left...

I left Microsoft for 18 months after being there 14 years. I decided to return because there were things in the culture I missed and I think Satya is driving some very positive changes (such as getting rid of Kevin Turner).

  • As someone who's never worked at Microsoft, it's sad to they give their employees a level ranking system. I'd much rather be at a company that values me for what I've done and who I am rather than my level.

  • Very glad I left, should've done it much, much earlier. 9 years at MS, now at Google. The grass is actually greener people!

  • I am actually thinking of switching but not sure. I am at level 61. But things have changed a lot and it's not the same company anymore. Microsoft is doing a lot of good stuff and I actually like my work.

    • very interesting. my experience at Microsoft has been very different, but I guess that differs by team and probably politics is more at higher levels. (I am just a recent 63)

    • Yea that's kind of different. I actually hear about mass firings at yahoo and people fleeing. So it's a little strange to hear that.
