What do y’all do when you get an exaggerated/untruthful resume? i.e. job titles don’t match their LinkedIn, exaggerate their number of direct reports, etc...
How do you know it's exaggerated?
In my case, LinkedIn and an interview.
Maybe they are keeping a low profile? My actual experience is far more impressive than what you’ll find about me on that site.
why would someone mismatch their job title on their resume with linkedin. You can say anything on linkedin, no one checks
I've done it because I've worked at companies where your title is just Software Engineer until you get to Principal, even if you're a senior and a tech lead (which I usually add in brackets next to the title). But also because I don't really care about my LinkedIn. I have no description on most of my positions on there. I do agree that lying about what you did and about your scope is unacceptable, though. Never done that.
It surprised me. The candidate even connected with me on LinkedIn prior to the interview, so it really stood out when I saw the resume.
Integrity matters. I don’t hire liars.
I like liars, but they need to be smoother than that
Some people just don’t update their LinkedIn
It disgusts me to see colleagues (or former colleagues) exaggerate on their LinkedIn.
Lmao I had an older but less experienced dude that I absolutely carried put “‘mentored younger developers” when I was the only one on the team younger 😂
I've run HR for 300-1000 employee companies and have always told employees who ask to use whatever title they think is helpful for their future employment on public facing profiles. Our internal titles may not match what other employers are looking for. Our SWE II could be your Senior Tech Lead SWE IC6. All that really matters is what they've done and whether they can back up those claims in an interview. Let them choose whatever title gets their foot in the right door. Frankly, it looks good for us if people come on as Jr Dev and leave 2-3 years later to be a tech lead at Netflix. That shows our commitment to investing in and developing on our employees. It makes sourcing great hires easier and paradoxically leads to a retention rate double the industry average.
