Rumors are flying that expedia firing was mostly done by managers and most ICs got impact. Very few TPMs and Managers got impacted. Looks like decision to layoff whom was on Managers and they have removed many strong or on-hook-for promotion candidates to remove competition which can out grow the managers. Folks with PIP will anyway be removed sooner or later without severance package. But to fill layoff numbers things like above may have happened. Rumors obviously.

Please Help :: Should I pursue CS Masters in USA or remain in India to join Startups?
Is there any data backing this or just 2nd hand rumor mongering?
Most managers had no idea, were informed on the same day that members of their team are being let go. Decisions were made at the VP+ level. I know of at least 5 cases like that
Do you think there will be data backing such politics ?
That’s always how it goes. Managers protect each other at the expense of IC’s
Most of the times manager decide it. Because they know who is performing who is not and whose salary to output is higher
I 100% think so too. How can somebody at an SVP level know who’s redundant and who’s not, unless the managers tell them or somehow volunteer them. It’s BS to say they are not involved because I’m sure that’s not the case
About 500 people in Seattle
This is 100% false. Managers weren't involved or even notified who was being RIf'd. That said, some teams they cut folks with performance issues. Other teams were based on project work streams. All that said, we went through the transformation to eliminate duplication and streamline workflow.... meaning there was duplication... This sucks but I still believe it was necessary.
Agree completely. And to the OP's supposition about ICs only: I personally know directors, managers, and TPMs that were laid off.
I agree here as well, but unfortunately i did also see high performing managers, directors, and IC’s that were hit as well. While there may have been some evaluation of performance, it wasn’t very deep IMO. Mid to low level management heard on Friday at the earliest.
Many TPMs got impacted. (they’re ICs too)
You’re right that it was all about meeting a target number. People managers all the way to the Director level were not involved sadly. It was Sr Director/VP calling the shots and that’s why we lost some of our best people on the team.😡
I know atleast 5 managers and TPMs who should've got fired when I worked with Expedia but none of them got fired. Instead 2 SDE1 and 3 SDE2 got fired in the team I worked. Looked like these SDE1,2 took some very bad decisions for the product and impacted Expedia's EBIDTA.
That’s brutal.
